Historical Description[]

The Egyptian city of Alexandria was one of many cities of the same name founded by Alexander the Great. In ancient times, it was home to the Great Lighthouse, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. As part of the Roman Empire, it surpassed Rome itself as the center of culture and learning in the Mediterranean world. Its Great Library housed many texts that were lost forever when it was destroyed, though history is uncertain as to the culprit.

While Alexandria remained a wealthy trading port for many centuries, under the Ottomans it was eclipsed by Rosetta, forty miles to the east. The construction of the Suez Canal and the rise of the Egyptian cotton trade led to the revival of Alexandria in the second half of the 19th century. The British bombarded and occupied the city in 1882, and it served as the main Allied naval base in the eastern Mediterranean during World War I. As part of the modern Egyptian state, it is now one of the largest cities in Africa.
