Anita fought alongside her husband Giuseppe Garibaldi in revolutionary wars in Brazil and Italy during the mid-19th century. Most notably she, her husband, and a brigade of Italian exiles fought a defensive battle against far superior forces on the river Uruguay, and later took part in an arduous march across the Apennines mountains while pregnant! She has been recognized as a national heroine of Brazil and is commemorated in statues and in film.
