Historical Description[]

The bustling seaport of Ashkelon occupied a strategic position on the Mediterranean coast of modern-day Israel. It was one of the great fortified cities of the Canaanites and Philistines until razed by the Babylonian king Nebuchadnezzar in 604 BCE.

Soon rebuilt by the Phoenicians, it passed into the hands of various powers including the Macedonians, Romans, Byzantines, and Muslims. Ashkelon saw fierce fighting during the Crusades and changed hands multiple times: for example, Saladin razed its fortifications, Richard the Lionheart constructed new ones, and Saladin razed them again. In the end, the Mamluks permanently destroyed the city in the year 1270.
