Historical Description[]

Perhaps the largest city in the world during its heyday, Babylon was built along both banks of the Euphrates River in Mesopotamia (present-day Iraq). Home to one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World – the Hanging Gardens of Babylon – the famed city was the capital of the influential rulers Hammurabi and Nebuchadnezzar II.

Babylon was also the site of the Etemenanki, a great ziggurat dedicated to the god Marduk that may have inspired the biblical story of the Tower of Babel. Though its political importance waxed and waned, it remained the scientific, literary, and cultural heart of the ancient Near East for thousands of years.
