Historical Description[]

Built by the British East India Company near the small fishing village of Kalikata in eastern India, Calcutta quickly developed into the trade and administration for the Company’s Presidency of Bengal. It was the capital of all British India from the late 18th century until 1911, when it was replaced by Delhi. In 2001, the city was officially renamed Kolkata.

Calcutta played an important role in the history of British rule in India. The account published about the nightmarish dungeon called the ‘Black Hole of Calcutta’ in 1756 prompted the British to send in an army under the general Robert Clive. His victory at the Battle of Plassey led to the consolidation and eventual expansion of East India Company control in the subcontinent. In 1857, the Sepoy Mutiny broke out due in part to rumors that cartridges produced at Calcutta’s Fort William were greased with the fat of pigs or cows, sacrilegious to the Muslim and Hindu sepoys (Indian soldiers) who had to bite them. The rebellion led to the fall of the Company and the establishment of the British Raj under direct Crown control.
