Historical Description[]

The Carro Veloce 33 or CV-33 was Italy's first local mass-produced armored vehicle. It was an example of the tankette class which was mostly used in the interwar period. Smaller even than a light tank, tankettes lacked movable turrets and heavy armor. Instead they tended to sport minimal protection and a fixed machine gun. On the plus side, they were highly mobile and cheap to produce. This left them better suited for scouting and infantry support roles than combat against real tanks.

The CV-33's Lanciafiamme version came equipped with a flamethrower. While the prospect of a mobile flamethrower was no doubt terrifying, its weak pump gave it an operational range of only about 40 yards. As a result, the crews were instructed not to fire it while driving at full speed, lest they set their own vehicle aflame.

The first major use of the CV-33 was in the Second Italo-Ethiopian War. It was exported to a number of armies in the 1930s, including Brazil, China, and the Spanish Nationalist army under Francisco Franco. Tankettes were considered obsolete by the outbreak of World War II, but the CV-33 nevertheless saw combat in many theaters. It was used in Italy right up until the surrender of German troops there in May 1945.
