Historical Description[]

Called the 'Queen of Cities,' Constantinople was founded in 330 CE on the site of the Greek town of Byzantium. The emperor Constantine christened it Nova Roma - ‘New Rome’ - but even before its construction was finished, it was already being referred to as Constantinopolis - ‘the city of Constantine.’ It became the capital of the Eastern Roman Empire, later called the Byzantine Empire, which survived the fall of the Western Empire for nearly a thousand years.

Occupying a strategic position on the Bosporus Strait, the city was the gateway between Europe and Asia. Its immense wealth was protected by impregnable double walls several meters thick, while its port on the Golden Horn could be guarded from naval assaults by raising a massive chain. Constantinople withstood numerous attacks over the centuries before being viciously sacked by the Venetian-led Fourth Crusade in 1204, but the walls themselves could only be brought down by the enormous bombards of the Ottomans in 1453. It became the Ottoman capital, and was officially renamed Istanbul under the modern republic of Turkey in 1928.
