Historical Description[]

A major Greek city-state throughout antiquity, Corinth fought alongside Sparta during the Peloponnesian War (431-404 BCE), lending its naval power to the struggle against the Athenian empire. According to Thucydides, the Corinthians developed the trireme, the warship of choice for the Greeks, Romans, and Persians for 300 years.

Unlike Athens, Sparta, and Thebes, Corinth never enjoyed a period of hegemony over Greece, and (perhaps as a result) it avoided the dramatic downfalls that befell those cities during the Classical period. It was eventually razed by the Roman consul Lucius Mummius in 146 BCE, the date that marks the beginning of direct Roman control over Greece.
