Historical Description[]

Known as the ‘Athens of Africa,’ Cyrene was founded in 630 BCE as a Greek colony on the coast of Libya. It grew rich and famous as the Mediterranean world’s major exporter of silphium, a rare and valuable medicinal herb that modern scholars have not conclusively identified. The city had some political importance as the capital of the Roman province of Cyrenaica, but declined into irrelevance in the 2nd century CE, partly due to the over-harvesting and subsequent extinction of silphium.

Cyrene was the birthplace of Eratosthenes, a geographer, astronomer, and mathematician who was the first person to accurately calculate the circumference of the Earth. It was also home to other brilliant thinkers like Aristippus, a disciple of Socrates who founded an influential school of hedonistic philosophy called the Cyrenaics. His daughter Arete carried on the family tradition, heading the school for many years after her father’s death.
