Historical Description[]

The site of modern Halifax on Canada’s Atlantic coast was originally inhabited by the prosperous Mi’kmaq peoples. After the indigenous population was decimated by European diseases, the English were able to settle below the fortified Citadel Hill in 1749. The town was built to serve as the capital of Nova Scotia as well as a bulwark against the French fortress at nearby Louisbourg.

Halifax grew wealthy supplying British fleets and armies during the French and Indian War, American Revolution, and War of 1812. It became a center of finance and trade during the peaceful century from 1815-1914 before resuming its role as an important naval base in the World Wars and Cold War. Decades of steady growth have been fueled in part by the opening of the Macdonald Bridge across its harbor in 1955. Today the city retains its martial character as the home of CFB Halifax, Canada’s largest military base.
