Historical Description[]

In Havana, Cuba possesses one of the best natural harbors in the Americas. The city was founded in 1519 and served as a base for the conquest of the New World. During Spain’s heyday from the 16th to the late 18th century, all the collected wealth wrung from her American colonies passed through its harbor, as it was the staging area for the massive treasure fleet that sailed for Europe every September.

The British conquered Havana in 1762 toward the end of the Seven Years War. Along with Manila, it was returned to Spanish control the following year in exchange for Florida (which Spain regained twenty years later following the American Revolution.) Not wanting to risk losing Havana again, Spain constructed the massive fortress of San Carlos de la Cabana. The city became a famous nightlife destination in the early 20th century as the capital of an independent Cuba.
