“A moderately-armored vehicle that specialized in destroying tanks and buildings.”
Their high damage against Defending Tanks, Buildings and Walls makes them useful to penetrate the enemy base.
Argentina nearly invaded Chile in 1978, then lost a war against the British over the Falkland Islands four years later. These experiences taught the Argentine military that they lacked the capacity to transport large-caliber weaponry over the vast distances of the southern plains. For a solution, they turned to their new TAM platform. The Tanque Argentino Mediano had been designed in the early 1980s by the West German firm Thyssen-Henschel for production in Buenos Aires. Several vehicles were created by adding different armaments to its chassis.
One of these was a self-propelled howitzer called the TAMSE VCA 155. It consisted of an Italian-made Palmaria turret mounted on a lengthened TAM hull. The 155 mm heavy gun matches that of the similar American M109 operated by dozens of countries. Only about 19 out of the planned 25 VCA 155 vehicles were built before budgetary concerns shut down the TAMSE production line in 1995. Its gun has yet to be fired in anger. While a number of export deals have fallen through, it will remain part of the Argentine arsenal for the foreseeable future.
