Historical Description[]

The Port of Helsinki gets its namesake from Finland’s capital and largest city. As Finland’s main port, it specializes in unitized cargo services and became the busiest passenger port in the world with over 12.3 million passengers in 2017. Although founded in the Middle Ages, Helsinki would remain a small fishing village for over two centuries.

However, once the Sveaborg fortress was constructed at the entrance to the harbor as a means to protect the population from Russian attack, the city became a key strategic location. Although fortified, Sveaborg fell to Russia during the Finnish War and Finland became apart of the Russian Empire as apart of the Treaty of Fredrikshamn. Russia moved the capital from Turku to Helsinki, and Helsinki would become the site of many historical events. Helsinki would go on to host the 1952 Summer Olympics, was named a European Capital of Culture in 2000, and was also named the World Design Capital in 2012. More recently, Helsinki is now home to some of the most influential mobile game development studios in the world!
