The Saint

Historical Description[]

Joan of Arc was born into a farming family in 1412. At the age of 13, Joan claimed to hear voices that pushed her to save France by ridding the country of its enemies, and to instill Charles VII as the king of France. The voices were deemed to be that of God and otherly heavenly influences, making her motivations and duties divine and righteous by nature.

At the age of 16, Joan’s father attempted to arrange a marriage for her. To contest this marriage, Joan brought the matter to the local court, arguing she should not be forced to marry against her will. The court ruled in favor of Joan, and later that year she set out to complete her holy quest. She sought an audience with the local magistrate in order to rise in power, and was initially rejected. A small group of followers began to follow her, claiming she was the virgin who was destined to save France, a prophecy that had become popular in France in the early 1400’s.

In order to better fit in with high-ranking military officials, Joan cut her hair and dressed in men’s clothing. She was granted a meeting with Charles VII, where she promised she would see him officially crowned King of France at Reims. Charles was advised against allowing Joan any military power, but Charles ignored advice and granted Joan leadership of a relief army that was sent to assist in the siege of Orléans. Against the odds, the French were successful in the siege and Joan of Arc was believed to have won the battle for the French.

During the Spring of 1430, Joan of Arc was captured by the Burgundians. The trial following her capture found Joan of Arc guilty of witchcraft and heresy. As punishment for her crimes, she was burned at the stake. 20 years later her trial was investigated by the Inquisitorial Court and was overturned. In 1920, Joan of Arc was canonized by the Roman Catholic Church and soon after was declared one of the patron saints of France.
