Historical Description[]

Kaohsiung was first opened as a port during the Qing Dynasty. It is one of the largest ports in the world and is the second largest city in Taiwan. The port was originally a natural lagoon that was under the control of various peoples and has been called many names throughout its history. The indigenous peoples of Kaohsiung referred to the area as “Takau,” and when the Dutch East India Company arrived during the 1620s, development began to cultivate the lagoon into a modern port.

After the Qing Dynasty lost the Second Opium War and signed the Treaties of Tianjin, the port officially became open to western traders. However, Taiwan and the newly named Port of Kaohsiung was ceded to Japan after the Qing lost the First Sino-Japanese War. Kaohsiung would be heavily bombed by the western Allies during World War II, which halted Japan’s attempted modernization of the city. At the end of World War II, Taiwan was returned to China. Today, the port is bustling and populous with many different production areas including separated zones for handling container docks, bulk and sundry goods, a fishery harbor, commercial goods, and a separate section for the naval base.
