Historical Description[]

The naval base of Kure lies about 15 miles southeast of Hiroshima on the Seto Inland Sea. It was established in 1889 and outfitted with industrial shipbuilding facilities. Dubbed the Kure Naval Arsenal, it became one of the four principal naval yards of Imperial Japan.

Kure’s greatest claim to fame is as the shipyard that built the Yamato, the largest battleship in history. She was completed in 1941 and entered service the following year as Japan’s flagship. Despite her size, she rarely entered combat and made little impact on the course of the war. Her final action, Operation Ten-Go, was a suicide mission in response to the American invasion of Okinawa. Her orders were to run aground on the island and fight as a massive gun battery until destroyed. Even this failed, as carrier-launched American aircraft sank the ship before it reached its destination. Nevertheless, the Yamato has become a lasting cultural symbol of Japanese strength, determination, and lost empire.
