Historical Description[]

Situated on the banks of the Nile river, the city of Memphis was the capital of Egypt during the Old Kingdom period, roughly 2700 - 2200 BCE. According to tradition, it was founded by Menes, the pharaoh who joined Upper and Lower Egypt to form the familiar unified kingdom of Egypt.

The most famous resident of Memphis was Imhotep, an architect, engineer, and physician who wrote one of the earliest known medical texts. This work was particularly notable for recommending rational, scientific treatments for injuries as opposed to supernatural prescriptions. Imhotep also designed the famous Step Pyramid of Djoser in the necropolis of Memphis at Saqqara.
