Historical Description[]

Like most European capitals, the city of Milan, Italy is no stranger to war. It was settled in approximately 400 BC by the Celtic people, but it was relatively swiftly conquered by Romans in 222 BC. Rome ruled the area until 774 AD, when the city surrendered itself to a Germanic tribe called the Franks, and their leader Charlemange.

A few hundred years later in 1395, the Emperor Wenceslas declared Milan a duchy in a good-faith effort to further establish Milan's citizens. However Milan again fell under siege, eventually dividing itself in 1450 after being conquered by Francesco Sforza. In the next hundred years, Milan was an active participant in the power struggle known as the Italian Wars. Not long after that in 1796, Napoleon's invasion reached and conquered Milan, declaring Milan the capital of the Kingdom of Italy. Milan was returned to Austrian control in 1815 after its Napoleonic occupation ended. In 1848, the citizens of Milan staged a rebellion against its Austrian rulers. With the help of their allies, the Sardinians and the French, they achieved victory, and the Kingdom of Italy was reformed shortly after that.

During World War II, Allied bombings devastated Milan. Italy eventually surrendered to German forces in 1945, but again the Milanese people revolted against their occupiers and took back control of their government. Despite its war-torn history, modern day Milan has seen remarkable economic growth, and is now a forefront of tourism in Italy.
