Historical Description[]

Lying on the delta of the Yangtze River, Nanjing has been one of the largest and most important cities in China - and indeed the world - for thousands of years. It has gone by many names, only being dubbed Nanjing (‘southern capital’) by the Ming Dynasty in the late 14th century. Nanjing was the capital of the Ming, the Republic of China, and several smaller states throughout Chinese history, including the Taiping Rebellion.

Though located slightly inland from the East China Sea, Nanjing is a major trading port. During the reign of the Yongle Emperor, massive expeditionary fleets were built and launched from its docks. These ships sailed vast distances in seven ‘treasure voyages’ under the admiral Zheng He. Nanjing is also home to numerous architectural and natural marvels, such as the Porcelain Tower and the Stone City.
