Historical Description[]

As the port city of Rome, the history of Ostia reflects that of the Roman state. Tradition places its founding in the late 7th century BCE, but (as with Rome) archaeological evidence shows signs of habitation much earlier than is written in the Latin histories. Early on, Ostia was important as a naval supply port and a producer of salt. It occupied a defensible strategic location at the mouth of the Tiber and acted as Rome’s outlet to the Mediterranean Sea.

In the glory days of the early Empire, Ostia flourished as the harbor that handled the enormous grain shipments that fed the Roman mob - the ‘bread’ part of ‘bread and circuses.’ It was also around this time that Ostia’s synagogue, the oldest yet discovered in Europe, was founded. Ostia fell into decline as the Western Empire weakened, and the city was completely abandoned in the early Middle Ages.
