Historical Description[]

Originally known as Puerto Anton, Port Antonio began as a settlement in Spanish Jamaica. In 1723, the Governor of Jamaica, the Duke of Portland, ordered that Port Antonio officially become a parish of Portland with the goal being to establish it as a naval stronghold. Soon after in 1729, Fort George was constructed in order to protect settlers from Spaniard naval strikes and from Maroon attackers coming from the hills.

In the 1870s Captain Lorenzo Dow Baker tasted his first banana in Jamaica. He became enthralled and decided to introduce the fruit to northern markets. He established the Boston Fruit Company, and turned the Port of Antonio into a famous shipping point for bananas and coconuts. Today the Port of Antonio is Jamaica’s third largest port. It has been romanticized in several Hollywood movies and is now a popular tourist destination for many travelers.
