General Information[]

Queen Regnant of Silla

Historical Description[]

Princess Deokman was born into royalty in 595. At this point in time, modern-day Korea was split into three kingdoms; Silla, Baekje and Goguryeo. Her father, King Jinpyeong, had reigned over Silla since 579 when he was 13 years old. There is conflicting information regarding Princess Deokman’s inheritance of the Crown. According to the Hwarang Segi texts, Princess Deokman competed with King Jinpyeong’s son-in-law for the claim to the Crown. The Samguk Yusa texts claim that there was no competition, and because King Jinpyeong had no son, Princess Deokman was his obvious successor. Despite the differences in how and why, it is agreed that King Jinpyeong died in 632, and thus Princess Deokman became the first Queen Regnant of Silla and took the name Queen Seondeok to reflect her new position.

Though controversial, Queen Seondeok formed an alliance with the Chinese Tang Dynasty in an effort to protect Silla from invading forces, mainly from Baekje and Goguryeo, while also maintaining a formidable offensive threat. She also arranged marriages between families of great power, which would benefit Silla in the future.

As the ruler of Silla, the livelihood of her people was Seondeok’s highest priority. Soon after being crowned, she sent royal staff and inspectors to study and improve the living conditions of the poor, orphans, the elderly and widows. Tax exemptions were given to peasants, and the taxes for the middle-class were lowered. Fast and effective methods to improve life for the citizens of Silla earned Seondeok her people’s favor and support.

Queen Seondeok died of an unknown illness in 647. She is remembered as a benevolent Queen who put the well-being of her people above all else, including lower-class citizens, who were normally ignored during this time period.
