Historical Description[]

Rangoon began as a small settlement called Dagon built up around the Shwedagon Pagoda, the holiest Buddhist site in Myanmar. Initially just a destination for pilgrims, it slowly grew into a center of trade. By the time the British conquered Burma in the late nineteenth century, the town had been renamed Yangon and developed into a thriving seaport.

Dubbed ‘Rangoon’ in English, it was named the capital of British Burma in the 1880’s. The city became a major commercial and cultural center. In 1878 the British established Rangoon University, the oldest institution of higher learning in Myanmar. Led by students from the university, Rangoon became a hotbed for the Burmese nationalist movement after World War I. The city remained the capital of an independent Myanmar until the government moved to the newly built city of Naypyidaw in 2006. It has been called by its proper Burmese name of Yangon since 1989.
