The Chief

Historical Description[]

Red Cloud, or Mahpiya Luta in Lakota, the native tongue of the Sioux tribe, was an influential leader of the Oglala Lakota. Red Cloud lost his father at an early age and was raised by his mother's uncle, Smoke, a leader of the Oglala Sioux. As a young man, Red Cloud distinguished himself as a powerful warrior by demonstrating great courage and grit during engagements against the enemies of the Oglala, including the Pawnee and Crow tribes.

It wasn't until 1868 that Red Cloud became one of the United States Army's most capable foes. In 1866, a war that we now know as Red Cloud's war had begun. The United States wanted to seize land from the Lakota, Northern Cheyenne and Northern Arapaho tribes after discovering gold in the Wyoming and Montana territories. The war was mainly comprised of small raids on U.S. forts with the main goal of wearing down civilians and soldiers so they would abandon their mission of conquering the lands. The most notorious action of the war was the Fetterman Fight, where 2,000 Native warriors, led by famous leaders such as Red Cloud and Crazy Horse, ambushed and killed 81 U.S. soldiers. The staggering defeat of the ambush, as well as the numerous raids over two years caused the U.S. to sign the Treaty of Fort Laramie, which gave the Native Americans legal control of the land they had been fighting for.

Red Cloud's War was the only War between the U.S. and Native Americans in which the U.S. Army was defeated. In 1870, Red Cloud traveled to the capital to lobby for Native American rights, where he impressed crowds with his charisma and diplomatic skills. After the war, Red Cloud did not continue to fight on the battlefield, but instead fought for the betterment of his people with diplomacy. Red Cloud died December 10th,1909 at the age of 88 on the Pine Ridge Reservation, South Dakota.
