“We fight not for glory, nor wealth, nor honor, but only and alone for freedom which no good man surrenders but with his life.”

General Information[]

The Good King

Historical Description[]

Robert I was born into an aristocratic Scottish family in 1274. In 1292, during a succession dispute over the new King of Scotland, Robert and his father refused to support King Edward I's decision of John Balliol. 4 years later Robert and his father would support King Edward's invasion of Scotland and aided in the dethroning of King Balliol. For the following 10 years Scotland would not be ruled by a monarch, but rather a council of guardians where Robert would serve. In 1306, Robert the Bruce fought with his greatest enemy, John Comyn, a fellow guardian of Scotland and the nephew of the past King Balliol. The rivalry would end after Robert the Bruce stabbed John Comyn to death on the altar at the church of the Greyfriars at Dumfries.

After the brutal killing of John Comyn, Robert was excommunicated by the pope and deemed an outlaw by King Edward. Despite his infamy, Robert the Bruce claimed the throne and was crowned King of the Scots in 1306. A year later, Robert was deposed by King Edward, who also executed three of his brothers and imprisoned his wife and daughters.

In the following years, Robert the Bruce waged a highly successful guerrilla war against the English. The Scottish forces successfully utilized guerilla tactics to weaken their opponent, and were also able to defeat the larger English armies in the open battlefield, most notably the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314. In 1324, the pope both recognized Scotland as an independent country, and Robert the Bruce as King. The fighting between the English and Scottish continued until 1327 when King Edward II was deposed and his son would take his crown, who then made peace with Scotland. Robert the Bruce died on June 7th, 1329 and was buried in Melrose Abbey.
