Historical Description Edit

"Russia arose as a nation after the tsars overthrew the Mongol Golden Horde in the fifteenth century. It was considered a backwater of Europe until the reign of Peter the Great, who modernized the army and brought Western European science and culture to the new capital he founded at St. Petersburg.

Catherine the Great continued these policies and oversaw Imperial Russia's golden age. In 1812, Napoleon's armies were fatally weakened by the Russian winter and the Russians' incredible sacrifice of burning Moscow.

The forces of Tsar Nicholas II fought on the side of France and Britain in World War I. The Russian Revolution in 1917 led to the creation of Soviet Union, a federation of 'Soviet Socialist Republics' which included Russia, as well as states in Eastern Europe and Central Asia. Soviet Union bore the brunt of the land fighting for the Allies during World War II and defeated Nazi Germany on the Eastern Front, which culminated in sacking of Berlin in May 1945 and ended the war in Europe. A brief but massive Soviet invasion of Manchuria played a key part in swift Japanese surrender on the Pacific Front and the end of World War II. In 1955, the Soviet Union and other Communist nations established the Warsaw Pact, which served as a politicaland ideologicial conterweight to the American-led NATO.
