Historical Description[]

Located in modern-day Lebanon, Sidon and its rival Tyre were the two dominant city-states of the eastern Mediterranean people called the Phoenicians. Best known for their prowess in maritime trade, the Phoenicians were the first Mediterranean people to regularly pass beyond the Pillars of Hercules (Gibraltar) and ply the Atlantic coasts of Europe and Africa.

The Phoenicians’ commercial endeavors were supported by their ability to manufacture costly luxury goods. Sidon became famous for glass production and also invented the exorbitantly expensive dye that would come to be known - no doubt to the Sidonians’ annoyance - as ‘Tyrian purple.’ Possibly the most lasting contribution of the Phoenicians is their alphabet, which became the ancestor of all modern alphabets.
