The Merkava Mark IV heavy tank began production in 2004. Its armor is modular, allowing for quick repairs so it can swiftly return to the battlefield. It retains the 120mm main gun of previous iterations, but it can fire different kinds of specialized ammunition. This ammunition is stored in fire-proof canisters to reduce the risk of cook-off. Another protective measure is that the turret is electrically powered, eliminating the reliance on flammable liquids the hydraulic turret systems in older tank models.
