Historical Description[]

Sunda Kelapa was the major port of the Sunda Kingdom in Indonesia. It was located on the island of Sumatra along the coast of the modern city of Jakarta. The prosperity of Sunda Kelapa was largely driven by the trade in pepper, of which Sunda was said to produce the highest quality in the world.

In 1522, the Portuguese signed an agreement with Sunda that allowed them to fortify the port and trade there freely. The neighboring Demak Kingdom considered this a threat and successfully invaded, renaming the town Jayakarta, ‘the city of victory.’ In 1619, forces under the Dutch East India Company razed Jayakarta and rebuilt it as Batavia. It served as the capital of the Dutch East Indies, then of the modern Republic of Indonesia under the name Jakarta after World War II.
