Supermarine Spitfire Engine

General Information[]

Supermarine Spitfire Engine is one of The Legendary War Artifacts, that can be stored and displayed at Museum.

Historical Description[]

One of the most successful and important engines of World War II was the British made Rolls-Royce Merlin PV-12. First designed and tested in 1933, the PV-12 was powered by a liquid-cooled V-12 piston aero engine. The engine contained twelve cylinders consisting of high-carbon steel liners with two inlet and two exhaust poppet valves of K.E.965 steel per cylinder. The Supermarine Spitfire was designed specifically to run with the PV-12 variant of the Rolls-Royce Merlin. The PV-12 provided the Spitfire with greater mobility and speed at high-altitudes than other engines of the time could, such as the P-40 Warhawk Allison V-1710 engine.

The power and agility of the PV-12 allowed the Supermarine Spitfires to compete in dogfights over Europe against the mighty German Luftwaffe. Without the Rolls-Royce Merlin PV-12, the British Airforce would not have withstood the power of the Luftwaffe and would likely have resulted in a different outcome for the second World War.
