Historical Description[]

Thessaloniki was first founded in 315 BC, and named after the sister of Alexander the Great, Thessalonike. During the Byzantine era, Thessaloniki was the richest city under the Romans due to its highly successful port. In the late 1300s, the city submitted to rule under the Ottoman Empire, where it eventually became a Janissary stronghold. This stronghold would quickly be attacked and destroyed by the rest of the Ottoman army, after the Janissaries led a rebellion against Sultan Mahmud II. Because the attack quashed a group of rebels, Sultan later named this event the Auspicious Incident.

More recently, Thessaloniki has regained its title as one of the most important hubs of trade, mostly in part to its port. In 1912, it was formally incorporated into Greece, and has since been largely developing itself. Tourism is a major economy driver, and its patrons can see a wide array of in-tact Byzentine buildings and statues. Modern day Thessaloniki is also known for its exciting nightlife, with large clubs that remain open throughout the night, as well as seemingly infinite bars and cafes to enjoy alongside the sunset on the Thermaic Gulf.
