Historical Description[]

In legend, Troy was a city of incredible wealth and strength, doomed to fall before the wrath of Achilles and the wiles of Odysseus. As depicted in Virgil’s Aeneid, the Romans considered themselves descendants of the Trojans through the hero Aeneas.

Long believed to be merely a myth, ruins identified as Troy were discovered in western Turkey by the German archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann in 1870. Since then, Hittite textual evidence has been found to corroborate the site’s authenticity, referring to the city of ‘Wilusa’ (identified with the Greek ‘Ilios’). Excavations have shown evidence of massive walls that were destroyed on multiple occasions. This may indicate devastating raids - perhaps by Mycenaean Greeks - though the ten-year siege depicted in Homer’s Iliad is still considered fantastical.
