Historical Description[]

Ur was one of the first cities ever built. Although the site is now located far from the Persian Gulf, in the ancient period the coastline was much further inland. As such, the city had direct access to the gulf, and its port was the major outlet to the sea for the Sumerian city-states.

Its cultural importance matched its prosperity. The Royal Standard of Ur is one of the best-preserved examples of Sumerian art, and the Royal Game of Ur is among the earliest board games yet discovered. King Ur-Nammu issued the first known legal code in Ur around 2100 BCE, predating Babylon’s more famous Code of Hammurabi by 300 years. Ur is also known as the traditional birthplace of Abraham, revered as a patriarch in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.
