Historical Description[edit | edit source]

The U.S. Air Force variant of the Army's Black Hawk utility helicopter is the Sikorsky HH-60 Pave Hawk. Although it replaced a Vietnam-era chopper called the Jolly Green Giant and an early version was known as the Credible Hawk, any superhero references appear to have been unintentional. The primary use of the Pave Hawk is recovering personnel from hostile territory. It is also equipped for troop insertion as well as civilian missions like search-and-rescue, medical evacuation, and disaster relief.

Compared to the Black Hawk, the HH-60 features advanced communications and navigation systems plus an in-flight refueling probe that extends its range. It is also specialized for night operations such as covert infiltration. Though not meant for combat, a pair of machine guns are attached just in case. The Pave Hawk is reaching the end of its intended service life as of 2020 after seeing extensive use from Operation Desert Storm through the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. The designated replacement is the HH-60W Whiskey, also known as the Jolly Green II.
