Historical Description[]

Since time immemorial, the December solstice has been celebrated with festivals and religious observances throughout the Northern Hemisphere. The cyclical behavior of the sun, the changing of the seasons, and their implications for life on Earth inspired ancient peoples to mark this occasion as a time of celebration and generosity. In the Yuletide festivals of Northern Europe, Germanic tribes slaughtered the majority of their cattle to avoid having to care for them during the harsh winter, producing a rare surplus of fresh meat. Patriarchs also brought home the largest log they could carry and set it ablaze to honor the return of the sun. Each spark from the fire was supposed to signify a calf or piglet to be born in the coming spring. Families feasted for a week or more until the Yule log finally burned out.

Ancient Rome also had a tradition of feasting and gift-giving in late December called Saturnalia. Romans honored Saturn, god of agriculture, by holding banquets, wearing festive garb, and suspending certain social norms. Slaves were encouraged to join in the revelry and were sometimes served by their masters. Wine flowed abundantly and gambling was permitted for all classes, leading to raucous behavior from even the most respectable citizens.

Many of these traditions have been passed down and incorporated into modern winter festivals such as Christmas and New Year’s Eve. How many holiday presents can you open up?
